Description
Adopted by Richard I of England (1189–1199), also known as Richard the Lionheart, the 3 Lions have become an unofficial symbol of England. Royal emblems depicting lions were first used by Danish Vikings, Saxons and Normans.
The earliest surviving representation of the three lions is on the Great Seal of King Richard I, which initially displayed one or two lions, but in 1198 it was permanently altered to depict three lions (perhaps representing Richard I’s three positions as King of England, Duke of Normandy, and Duke of Aquitaine).
